2006 Pope Incites Protests: Pope Benedict XVI in a public speech quotes the words of a 15th century Byzantine emperor who characterized the teachings of Islam's founder, the Prophet Mohammad, as "evil and inhuman." The quote stated, "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
