Pottawatomie Massacre: Abolitionist John Brown leads a party which kills five pro-slavery settlers in retaliation for the killing of five free-state settlers in Kansas.

First Morse telegraph message: Samuel F.B. Morse sends the message, "What hath God wrought!," from Washington to Baltimore.
