General Outline of Video - Creationist View
Expounds the Fine-Tuned
Universe idea that because everything fits so perfectly and
precisely, that it must have been created.
The video starts with quotes from famous scientists, philosophers, etc.
about the wonders of nature. Astronaut Guy Gardner describes the
sense of awe one gets when viewing the Earth from space. The video
then describes the delicate balance between the Earth's physical
characteristics and the life it supports. Examples given
include that the distance from the Sun which gives the Earth an average
temperature of 59º F, while Venus' closer distance causes temperatures of
up to 900º F, and the temperature drops to -200º F on Jupiter due to its
greater distance. The 24-hour rotation of the Earth is short enough
to prevent extreme temperature changes between night and day, while
Mercury's longer 59-Earth-day rotation causes long hot days and cold
nights. The Moon's distance and size are just right to cause just
the right amount of tidal action. The conclusion is that if any of
the many finely-adjusted features of the Earth were different, then life
as we know it would not exist. Therefore, there must have been a
creator who made these things just right.
This was a fascinating study of some of nature's wonders and the
building blocks that support life on Earth.. Those who enjoy nature
programs will probably enjoy this video. I did. The main
conclusion of the video was that since the Earth and the life on it are
finely tuned, there must have been a creator. Other than give
examples of fine-tuning, the video does little else to support this
claim. While this is certainly a possible explanation, there
are other possible explanations. While it is true that certain
conditions have to be met for life to evolve, the essay 13 Cards
(please read in order to understand the following) shows that they
don't have to be all that precise. Nature adapts and fits itself to
the 13 cards that are dealt. After exiting a room and realizing that
you walked through the doorway and not two feet to left and into the wall,
you don't say, "Gee, what were the odds that a doorway was just right
there were I was walking?" No, you adapted your actions to your
environment. Had the door been on the left, you would still have
walked through the door, just a little differently. Nature is the
same. Had the tides been stronger or weaker, there would still be
coastal life, it would just be different so that it could cope with the
tidal action. Change the conditions, i.e. move the door or deal a
different 13 cards, and nature will still exist, it'll just be different.
This is also explored in the review of the video
The Privileged Planet.
I don't think that either explanation,
in and of itself, qualifies as proof, so it comes down to a matter of
faith and further study.
