There is overwhelming evidence that Earth is at least millions of years
old. The general consensus among the various scientific groups (biologists,
cosmologists, physicists, geneticists, etc.) is that it is about 4.5
billion years old. While there is room for disagreement on
this figure, the evidence that the Earth is at least millions of years old
is overwhelming. There are many claims
by Young Earth Creationists that the Earth is
less than 10,000 years old. I have yet to find a single one of these
claims that has any real merit. Some of the most popular of these Young Earth
claims are utter nonsense and most have been convincingly disproved,
yet they are still being perpetuated
and continue to persist in the public mind. Those who continue to
perpetuate these disproved claims are either incredibly uninformed, or are intentionally
trying to mislead. If you know of a Young Earth
claim that has not
been disproved, please send it to epicidiot.com.
Send good Young Earth
claims to epicidiot.com
and include references.
If this sounds harsh, it's because intentionally misleading people
is wrong. Some of the Young Earth
claims are so ridiculous and so easy to convincingly disprove that it is
simply a lie to keep telling them. And yet, they are repeated
over and over again in current webs, publications, bible tracts (Lying
in a Bible tract has got to be a sin, right?), etc.
Those who believe in the Bible should consider
the following:
Remember the old saying, "Those who cannot
remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
In much the same way the Church once taught the
Earth-centered universe, some Christian
groups are drawing a similar line in the sand: Either you believe
that the Earth is very young as told in the Genesis account, or you
don't believe the Bible. With this firmly ingrained in their
minds, how many will be driven away from the Bible as the evidence
overwhelmingly mounts that the Earth is very old? I believe
that at best there is one more generation that will be willing to
ignore the evidence and believe in a young Earth. Just as
Galileo's time marked the end of belief in the Earth-centered
universe, the days of believing in a Young
Earth are numbered.
See Does the
Bible teach a Young Earth?
But, for the sake of fairness, I will continue to list Young Earth
claims. Read the evidence and decide for yourself.

Radiometric Dating
Radiometric dating gives the Earth an
age of about 4.5 billion years and the Universe an age of about 17-20 billion
years. The validity of radiometric dating is often checked by comparing
the radiometric date with non-radiometric
dates of objects, such as historical accounts, tree rings, ice cores, etc.

Non-Radiometric
Dating
These methods have been used to
provide independent lower limits for the age of the Earth. Also, by
radiometrically dating these items the accuracy of radiometric dating can
be cross-checked. This has shown that radiometric dating is in general
extremely accurate. Some of these include Tree Rings, Ice Cores, Coral Reefs, Varves, Green River Shale,
Lake Suigetsu Algae. More >>
Creation
Dating based on the Bible
Many have used the
events in the Bible to calculate when the Genesis creation occurred. They
generally give a date of about 4000 B.C., although they range from about 3,600
B.C. to 10,000 B.C. The most famous of these was done by
Archbishop Ussher,
who determined that the day of creation day was October
23, 4004 BC. More >>
